SJ's Rating- Middle Shelf
Smooth, sweet & delicious just perfect with a hearty meal.  Light & refreshing, I enjoyed it!
Though it is a balanced neutral spirit, and not too sweet, it is not for my palette. I will have it once in a while with dinner.

The second segment(Technical details that are mostly available on a google search)

This is the first time I had Jinro Soju(spirits distilled from grain,13-24%ABV). There is not a whole lot about the distillery and how it's made. The company website states "Since it's launch in 1924, jinro soju has consistently held its position as the number one soju brand in Korea while revolutionizing Korea's drinking culture".
It claims to be the world's best-selling spirit brand for 20 years, I did not know that! Ingredients that go in are selected grains and spring water.
Jinro strawberry soju is a neutral spirit(colorless) made with natural and artificial flavors. Apparently, it uses strawberry in this expression.

Vital stats- Jinro Soju Strawberry, Korean Spirit
Price- $15 for 375ml bottle

Pairing food with drinks

Hello single malters, today I am not reviewing any liquor. Instead, sharing my picture gallery of food that I enjoyed with my drinks. Whisky & food pairing is a very complex subject on its own and I continue to find out what food best compliments a particular liquor.

I have to admit that Nepali food is the best with any drinks. The spicy food makes drinking highly enjoyable. Turning back to my blog, I enjoyed momos with my drinks the most.

When tasting single malts- No food pairing is needed because single malt is a taste in itself and food will interfere with the real flavor and also the aroma. Hence, I eat first then drink.

As a rule of thumb pair food with the flavor of the whisky for example if you taste vanilla in your whisky pair it with vanilla ice cream.

Enjoy my Delicious food gallery!

Nepali food

Sausage & spicy potatoes on a stick
Chicken momo with Yuengling beer

Sausage & Spicy potatoes on a stick
Pork Choila

Bhatmas sadheko, aachar

Mutton sukuti

Other food

The Glenlivet 12 Illicit Still

The first segment(Mostly not available on google search)

Occasions, tips, alternates, cocktails, food pairings, SJ's Rating, Feel.

SJ's Rating- Middle Shelf
Nothing stands apart,  had better expectations but fails to meet it. I found the regular "legal" Glenlivet 12 much smoother than this :-)
Occasion-  Movie night, watched "Exodus", Paul Neuman's 1960s movie
SJ's Pro tip- Add a couple of ice cubes to cut the high ABV
Alternates- Cutty Sark Prohibition edition
Feel- Not impressed 😐

The second segment(Technical details that are mostly available on a google search)
Glenlivet 12 Illicit still is non-chill filtered with a robust ABV. The product label says it all "Before George Smith licensed his distillery in 1824, the Glenlivet valley was full of Illicit whisky trade. This limited edition is inspired by our father's original and illegally distilled, Glenlivet whiskey". Apparently, the recipe used during that time was not as smooth as the original one.

Vital Stats- The Glenlivet 12 Illicit Still
Price- $63.99
Age- 12 years
ABV- 48%
Region- Speyside
Distillery- The Glenlivet Distillery, Banffshire, Scotland

Seagram's 7 American Blended Whiskey

The first segment(Mostly not available on google search)
Occasions, tips, alternates, cocktails, food pairings, SJ's Rating, Feel.

SJ's Rating- Bottom Shelf
Can't expect much from a $12 whiskey. I always try to prove myself wrong. But this time I was right, just a cheap whisky that can be used for cocktails.
Occasion- When binge-watching "Better Call Saul" on Netflix
SJ's Pro tip- If you are stuck with one then simply add some club soda to make it drinkable.
Alternates- Jameson(cheap yet highly enjoyable)
Cocktails- Highball
Feel- Horrible, not impressed πŸ˜’

The second segment(Technical details that are mostly available on a google search)
A simple search shows that Seagram is owned by Diageo. No more information about the distillery. Apparently, it is a blended whiskey so they source and blend it from other distilleries.

Seagram's 7 blended whiskey is 75% grain spirit. I personally do not like grain spirits and prefer barley which is why my go-to is single malts.

Vital Stats- Seagram's 7 American Blended Whiskey
Price- $12.99 for 750ml($1.29 for pictured sampler)
Age- NAS
ABV- 40%
Region- USA
Distillery- 7 Crown Distilling Co, New York, NY
Awards won- None, I give it the worst American blended whiskey

Tasting info-
Serving glass- Glencairn whisky glass
Serving style- Neat
Appearance- Dark
Aroma- Light oak, nothing stands out
Flavor- Like tasteless water, some chocolate sweetness
Body- Light
Finish- Short, non-lingering.

Cheers! Enjoy Responsibly πŸ₯ƒπŸ₯ƒ

Sadashi Japanese Whiskey

The first segment(Mostly not available on google search)
Occasions, tips, alternates, cocktails, food pairings, SJ's Rating, Feel.

SJ's Rating-  Bottom Shelf
Worst Japanese Whiskey I have ever had. Tastes like bad tap water.
Occasion- Movie night(Watched "Blackthorn", an excellent modern-day western movie!)
SJ's Pro tip- Use it for cocktails
Cocktail- Highball
Feel- Bitter

The second segment(Technical details that are mostly available on a google search)
Yes, I know most things can be found on the internet but not this one. I cannot make heads or tails out of the description. The bottle label says "Made in Japan" and also says "Bottled in Spain". Go figure πŸ˜‘. This is a whiskey that is made for big box stores like Total Wine just for the sake of it.
This expression claims to have been finished in Mirunara oak. This is a type of oak tree found exclusively in Japan and itself takes about 200 years to grow. Does not capture the essence of Japanese whisky which should be smooth, flavorful, and long finish.

Vital Stats- Sadashi Japanese Whiskey Mizunara Oak
Price- $34.99 for 750ml
Age- NAS(No Age Statement)
ABV- 43%
Region- Japan
Distillery- No information

Serving glass- Glencairn Whiskey Glass
Serving style- Neat
Appearance- Medium gold
Aroma- Very faint oak, citrus, chocolate
Flavor- Powerful start but nothing stands out, spicy & bitter

The first segment(Mostly not available on google search)

Occasions, tips, alternates, cocktails, food pairings, SJ's Rating, Feel.

SJ's Rating- Middle Shelf
I did not enjoy it as much so it is on my Middle Shelf.  I have a love/hate relationship with rum. On one hand, I like the aroma of this rum but I found the taste somewhat medicinal and syrupy(maybe it's just me). If you find yourself in my position, try it in different ways like in cocktails, with club soda, or on the rocks.

Occasion- After dinner
SJ's Pro tip- Use it as a mixer if you do not prefer sipping neat
Cocktail- Hot toddy, Sazerac, Old Fashioned & Manhattan(recommended on its website)
Feel- Medicinal

Crown Royal Black Canadian Whisky

The first segment(Mostly not available on google search)
Occasions, tips, alternates, cocktails, food pairings, SJ's Rating, Feel.

SJ's Rating- Middle Shelf
It is quite a robust drink at 45% ABV. The appearance is really dark and beautiful. I found the flavor a little bitter and on the artificial side, somewhat medicinal but still better than Ensign Red Canadian Whisky. However, did not meet my expectation to be in the top spot. The packaging is very good and great for a gift.
Occasion-  When you need a warm, robust drink
SJ's Pro tip- Add a little bit of water or club soda to get rid of the bitterness
Alternates- Whistlepig is a Canda sourced whisky but it's higher price-wise. For a royal feel go with Chival Regal.
Cocktail- Whisky sour
Feel- Warm
Food Pairing- Unsalted Peanuts(by default its the perfect choice)

The second segment(Technical details that are mostly available on a google search)
The product label says it all "Crown Royal blended Canadian whisky was first created as a gift for the king and queen of England, to honor them during their visit to Canada in 1939. To this day, every bottle of Crown Royal whisky is crafted to meet that same uncompromising standard"
Crown Royal Black is matured in charred oak barrels and blended at a higher proof for a richer texture.

Dewar's 15 Blended Scotch

Dewar's 15 Blended Scotch is on my Middle Shelf

The first segment(Mostly not available on google search)
Occasions, tips, alternates, cocktails, food pairings, SJ's Rating, Feel.

SJ's Rating- Middle Shelf
Does not do justice for a 15-year-old. There is no oak element to this whisky and is more towards the sweet short fruity side. If you don't like oaky then it is for you.
